PLEASE CHECK SURROUNDINGS FOR SAFETY

Please Check Surroundings for Safety is a collaboration between my boyfriend and I — and a 2014 Mazda 3. Fascinated by the discovery that our new car had a reverse-facing camera, which enables only when the car is in reverse, we began to text each other images of what the car was “seeing” while we were driving. Familiar locations looked different, distorted by the car’s vantage point. The car’s taillights illuminate the landscapes in ghostly ways. The message exchange became a game — could we identify where the other person was based upon a photo of the image from the car’s camera?

The photo messages morphed into iPhone videos, which included the element of the radio playing while the car was backing up. Over time, the game grew old, but the videos serve as strange segments of our life in Mesa, Arizona.
