PROJECT: The Living Line

This project -The Living Line explores the interrelationship between natural and human processes of Tempe Town Lake, which is an urban landscape formed by the intersection of natural and human orders. This project is the understanding and noticing how human’s behavior and city’s development affecting the lake and the lives around it through a landscape architecture student`s perspective. For this project, three themes are explored are nature, human and time.

There are two orders in the world we are living, natural order and human order. Two key ways that humans understand the world are through art and science. Both art and science have provided us both cultural connection to and greater understanding of the Salt River. The Salt River was a critical resource and piece of natural infrastructure that defined early urban development in Tempe; it is the first line to define the city. Over time, humans tamed and redefined how the river moved and functioned. Today, Tempe Town Lake represents humans taming nature and forms a linear east-west path along downtown Tempe’s northern edge. Road and rail systems add more linear corridors across the lake.

The montage images` idea are envisioning Tempe Town Lake serves as a new and necessary layer to Tempe’s urban space. From a designer's perspective, this vision is to make the city explicitly more coevolutionary, adaptive and relevant to start conversations on how to design for resiliency.
