PROJECT: Home Tour-2011
“When we talk about an object of desire, we are really talking about a cluster of promises we want someone or something to make to us and make possible for us. …the surrender to the return to the scene where the object hovers in its potentialities is the operation of optimism as an affective form.” –Lauren Berlant, Cruel Optimism.
One day a year, “home tour” brings together year-round practices and materiality animating “historic” Phoenix. For a small fee, tourgoers meander through other people’s homes, viewing the ordinary "clusters of promises" comprising the domestic sphere: “kitchen”, “bathroom”, “bookshelf”. Vendors on hand offer accoutrements to complete the set, enliven the pact, renew the vow.
To move, through each house: to return, each year. Home tour is defined by the magnetism of repetition, each ordinary domestic assemblage charged with optimism.
