Description: Built shortly after Arizona’s statehood, this 1915 wood frame house has been kept standing by countless hours of ordinary tasks and tools; soapy suds, brushstrokes, hammer strikes, termite deaths. Maintained for decades only to experience neglect sometime in the last 20 years, 2222 N. 8th Street is a testament to the necessity—and continual enactment of—domestic practice.

Description: Barbara Hale, seen here in 1946, remembers life lived out-of-doors; tree-shaded days, nights spent in the backyard. Urbanization necessitated changes in water delivery and price. Air conditioning brought desert dwellers inside. Today, water conservation campaigns gives desert vegetation sex appeal. Tomorrow, the urban heat island may necessitate lawnscaping. Water circulates.

Augustana’s unusually progressive social contribution to the neighborhood might just be attributed to its topsy-turvey architecture; in the late 1970s the Church hosted (an openly) gay men’s choir.
